Often, we think of joy as an emotional state rather than a positive human condition that can be either a feeling or an action. The Bible uses joy in both senses. As a feeling a person automatically experiences it because of certain favorable circumstances that cannot be commanded. However, there is a joy that Scripture commands; the joy of action that can be engaged in regardless of how we feel. The Psalms help us realize that we can find joy in every circumstance. We can find joy in every area of life, because joy is a gift from God that comes when we acknowledge God’s work in our past, His plan for our present, and His power over our future.
